quality performances in film/tv

piggybacking off this altho he's a great comedian i fucking love how deliciously evil he is in creepshow. 10/10 performance. solid movie all arouns tbh. watching him crack up is great
I was so used to Leslie Nielsen being a comedic actor that I was legitimately caught off guard seeing him in dramatic roles, like in Forbidden Planet

I guess his serious acting chops is why him in Airplane! was a real coup because audiences were expecting a serious film (afterall, it has Leslie Nielsen in it!)

craig charles in red dwarf is classic
i think the key is that the role fits his personality so he didn't have to act much

also, everything leslie nielsen touched in the 80's was gold
Red Dwarf is an all time classic

OK so they used to play Red Dwarf on local PBS station KTEH-54 in San Jose as part of Sci-Fi Sunday, and the Boys from the Dwarf would regularly visit the station and just have lots of fun during their PBS pledge drives. It sucks because a lot of that footage is lost to time but I love seeing it when it reappears now and then:

I think I should be honest with you: I didn’t laugh. Not once. I WANTED to laugh after reading your big buildup. I was WAITING to laugh, but it just didn’t happen.

man, craig is so energetic there i wonder how much cocaine he was on at the time
...i adore him. i dunno, i was re-viewing ghostwatch the other day out of season (we're nowhere near halloween) n he's just so damn charming. he really lights up every scene he's in n he's got such a melodic voice.

did you ever see the american red dwarf? like most successful u.k. shows, u.s. tried to make a version of it
hold on, lemme see here
yeh found it
watch at your own peril. it's painful. bro is horribly mis-cast (due to not being craig charles)

No, Craig wasn't on any cocaine back then! He was completely sober... r-right? :'(

American Red Dwarf is so weird! I've seen it a few times, here are my favorite thoughts about it:
  • American.Cat was played by Hinton Battle, who Danny John-Jules revered as a dancing GOD. I loved that connection!
  • The producers thought Robert Llewellen was American (or at least Canadian) and thought they could cut budget costs by bringing him in to play Kryten again.
  • Most of the jokes fell flat, but I think the one joke that was better than the British version was when American.Lister was told he's been asleep for 3 million years, then quipped "My baseball cards must be worth a FORTUNE" :D
I'm legit pissed off because I literally have all of it on DVD but in a recent move they seemed to have disappeared, and I don't want to have to rebuy them. I just happen to have this photo:

Looong agooo... It was Dark... AND STINKYYY
Ren & Stimpy walked so that Sponge Bob could run.

I hate that we live in a timeline where Sponge Bob has the more cultural capital than Ren & Stimpy... and that John K is a horrible fucking pervert.

not a performance really but a segment handyman corner on the red green show is legit
lol they also had Red Green on KTEH :D I only knew about it because I mistook it for Red Dwarf on the TV guide

I didn't like it when I was a kid but as an adult I have a greater appreciation for it

My own quality performance contribution is Dr. Peter Weller's depiction of Alex Murphy in ROBOCOP

i found red green when i was in high school so i was getting to be around the right age to appreciate it

picking robocop is just cheating... but it also reminds me that weller was in buckaroo banzai with john lithgow, jeff goldblum, and clancy brown. all of whom are amazing in whatever they're in, but i'll try n narrow the focus some
lithgow is fucking great in s4 of dexter
goldblum's amazing in jurassic park
clancy brown is amazing in shawshank
