When grandfather finally leads his estranged granddaughter up the hill, backlit by a breathtaking vista of the Swiss Alps, and allows her into his home. The Scene that awaits her is perhaps more than a little less breathtaking, but perfectly suitable nonetheless. It's clear that grandfather lives in a state of comfort.
"You sleep up there," says the grandfather. Surely a suitable bed awaits this poor little girl at the top of these stairs. Surely, after a young lifetime of being passed around from one relative who doesn't want her to the next, she'll be offered a decent home.
What she finds instead at the top of these steps is an ordinary hay loft fit only for a house mouse. And yet, she's delighted. It's a display of spiritual resilience that ought to be rewarded, and it just isn't.
"Will you hear my prayers?" Heidi says. "Say your prayers to God," the grandfather retorts, "you need no intermediary." Heidi is only asking for the smallest gesture of warmth from her grandfather, but it's just as well that she's denied.
Also, lol, I didn't know it would be that easy.
