Online Safety Act UK Jul 2025

British uptake of internet services that disguise a user’s online location has surged after new age verification rules came into force in the UK, threatening to undermine government efforts to protect children online.Thousands of sites offering adult content, as well as popular social media apps including X, Reddit and TikTok, have introduced new “age assurance” systems and controls for UK users since Friday, to comply with the Online Safety Act.

Doesn't deserve its own thread because the UK is a fucked hellscape anyway and this doesn't change anything but it's pretty bad that this has happened.

They're doing it in the US next. I don't know how long it's going to take them to coerce the developers of forum software like PhpBB and XenForo to comply or whether that's even possible. It seems like an interesting thing to contemplate. I haven't been affected at all by this because I don't use Pornhub or Reddit.

I'm pretty sure every website I've visted like this already has the sort of data that would've been collected by providing identification anyway, it's no less concerning that they're asking for it now

How do the “age assurance” systems work?

I guess a lot of them are using AllPass Trust
Discord has its own in-house one, the only way I know is there's one channel on the /vg/station Discord that's NSFW
Maybe photo ID becomes neccessary later on, I don't know. It'll get repealed in the next couple of months or there'll be a landslide Reform UK victory in the next general election. Everyone in the UK including me is addicted to the internet and doesn't compromise on the need to use a VPN to access porn probably. This is their silver bullet. I'm pretty sure this is the silver bullet of the Labor party.

How would verify by email work? It’s almost certain that they will end up demanding photo and/or video verification and that would be the end of privacy in the UK.

Unfortunately, Texas has fallen.

It has become a kike puppet state (more so then the rest of America), and I feel that this is just a way to keep track of the more week minded, porn addicted anti-semites.

I read that people (kids) already found a loophole to it. I guess they were using photo mode in Death Stranding and made Sam Porter Bridges do the required facial expressions to bypass the security requirements lol.

Provider: VerifyMyAge Ltd. (VMA)
User process:
  1. User selects “Verify by email” in APT.
  2. User manually enters their email address.
  3. VMA sends a time-limited OTP link to the email.
  4. User clicks the link to verify ownership.
  5. VMA analyses the email's digital footprint using: ...
  6. VMA estimates the user's age.
  7. If result indicates 18+, APT flags user as verified.
Also serves to reinforce the idea that websites are already easily able to obtain data such as browsing history. Biometric data maybe isn't that important on its own, they might want to collect it so that in the moment they can reference users on the internet and connect the activity to the individual using the computer at the time. It'll be selective state-surveillance for people criticizing the government or recognizing the consequences of their policies. I have an inkling much of the data collected will be filtered first and foremost for signs of anti-migrant sentiment or precursors to organized protesting

A national police unit will monitor social media for signs of anti-migrant disorder amid fears of a repeat of last summer’s riots across England.
Detectives from across the country will flag up the early signs of civil unrest under a beefed-up National Police Coordination Centre (NPoCC) in Westminster.
The new intelligence team is a response to the anti-migrant disorder across England and Northern Ireland after the murder of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club in Southport last July.

Anti-migrant disorder makes it sound like a mental illness. There are hotels all across the UK at the moment where large amounts of violent criminal activity is occurring and the cultural ideas of most naturalized citizens aren't respected. The government is eager to prevent rioting and the rioters are eager to prevent illegal immigration, and in light of some of the consequences of the latter it's not difficult to identify which side of the dichotomy most citizens are going to align themselves with

Sorry I don't know why I pivoted so sharply towards talking about migration. I don't really understand where the data collected from age verification is supposed to end up but I assume somewhere along the pipeline it might get collated by an online police unit. Historically it's somewhere they've funnelled a lot of their resources. In the place of violent crime, many police officers are obligated to respond to cases of harmful speech
Hear it from someone smarter than me and without such a propagandized bent I suppose

Who is voting for the politicians who keep implementing police state policies in the UK? It cannot be true that a majority of Britains WANT to be constantly surveilled

I know Quence is probably a parody account but I'll respond anyway
People can get new email addresses at any time.
I still don’t see how email verification would work properly.
It can't be a new email address. That method relies on checking the address against multiple databases where it has been submitted as a credential, probably with a focus on retailers and ecommerce, then presumably the demographic of those products or the legal requirements for engaging with any of those products is used to estimate their age

It's the house of commons in parliament that always becomes the final say in any legislature that gets passed. Most of them probably respond positively to the concentration of power.

It's kind of ironic that VMA seems to be one of the easiest identification systems to subvert, the one that got employed by the most popular porn website. Spotify, Discord and many other online services seem far less lenient and you're forced to choose between providing biometrics or a manual review

So people who don’t want to give up personal information will be basically locked out of social media in the UK?
