There was some German law passed requiring them to shut down "hate speech" and to verify people's identity.
Well interestingly enough, Proton had considered moving to Germany

So I do wonder what is up with that "verify people's identity", Germany is privacy friendly country after all.
The entire idea of me owning ED was to try to push back such laws.
The reason why they kick you off is due to
NetzDG, while I would go legal way to stand for ED, it would however create a certain risk.
Sometimes the only way to avoid a ban hammer would be partial censorship, which can be done in lulzy way but can harm some articles
(unless it was actually illegal content in entirety of the world as such content must be removed anyway). And that just sucks.
Also you would need to completely remove logging of IP from XenForo and MediaWiki (as well as the server), because they could rely on
NetzDG and ask you for IP of user who created such post, there is no law that would enforce you collect the data more than necessarily.
