In the first Transformers movie, Porche wouldn't let Michael Bay use a 935 Turbo for Jazz because they didn't want their car associated with violance. That was stupid. In 1977, how many people went out and bought a Firebird because of Smokey and the Bandit or a Gran Torino because of Starsky and Huth? I'd like to say a 1972 Ferrari Daytona because of Miami Vice but most people don't have $1.5 million to throw away.

That's definitely on my list to get. A new one is 12-15K and bullets are 8+ bucks a round.

While each round is expensive, the M82 has it's niche just like all other firearms. Are you carrying it out in the field on regular patrols? Not if you don't like sadistic punishment because lugging around a 30+ lbs rifle is going to be a absolute bitch.
Other calibers are nearly as expensive. My all copper fragment rounds for my 338 are about $5 a round and the armor piercing rounds are $7.50. and that was about six months ago.
For long range human targets, a 6.5 Creedmoor is a good choice, to about 800 yards. If you develop talent you can easily push it out to 1.2 - 1.5km. Just like 308. But for that purpose I have 338 LM. I've watched YT videos where guys were ringing 24x24 inch steel at 2 miles with at 338LM. Before you say that's no big deal, 24 inches is about the width of an average man. And at two miles it's going to be a real shocker for the people that witness the hit.
The longest official shot, not including Ukraine, because the Ukrainians are full of shit, is just over two miles with with this:
a McMillan TAC-50 which is made to far tighter tolerances and uses "match" 50 BMG ammo which is not the standard unlinked round the 50 Barret uses.
(basically 50BMG rounds packaged better. but I'm pretty sure they hand load their stuff. Snipers tend to be picky and have the time and budget to do so, from what I understand.)
The Barret being a semi-auto, has to have a certain amount of "slop" in it to work properly. This amount of slop is typical in all semiauto and (greater) in full auto rifles due to the nature of how the rifle feeds. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you can't shot an asshole two miles away with a Barrett, i'm saying it's going to be difficult to consistently repeat that type of shot. And depends on the asshole.
With that in mind, I look at firearms like duffers look at golf clubs. There is no "one perfect club for all situations."
What a pistol be perfect for, a 18 inch AR will be too cumbersome, what would be perfect for a shotgun may be difficult to maneuver with a bolt action rifle, what is perfect for a bolt action rifle is too much to ask for for a 10.5 barrel AR.
