i got the tecumseh book. i take issue with the heathen degenerate bashing, but as someone who spent way too long reading the forum posts of ppl who swore to astral project n commune with king paimon n swear he's cool with granola bar offerings, and also read a sincere webpage abt how hitler was the second coming of jesus, i understand it...

the whole "authenticity" chunk n the hypocrisy in it reminds me of a short beige farmer homie posted a few days back draggin' a dude with a reactionary take
-getting gently told off in algonquin
-google "piscataway language" n google says it's extinct

what do you mean by heathen degenerate bashing? the stuff he said about how fake modern paganism is? that is true. it's ironic that my version of Christianity probably, no fuck probably, *CERTAINLY* has more authentic pagan elements than any of those larp religions*. of all the branches of Christianity, the protestants cleansed theirs from pagan and prechristian elements the most, making it the most dry and boring one, which is in my opinion why people in the west turned to larp paganism, satanism, etc. people need mystery, pomp, rituals. same goes for the atheists who claim that they don't need religion as the bedrock of their morality while being brought up in a society with morality based on Christianity.

the futnote that couldn't fit in my first message:
*Children put on masks and costumes and go around the neighborhood, from door to door, and get candy, sounds familiar?
of course it does, it's Serbian Christmas, what else would it be?
sacred trees called "inscriptions", around which village and town religious celebrations took place, and some of which used to even receive blood sacrifices (sheep slaughtered, making sure that its blood sprays the roots..). this is why i cringe when i see metalheads going viking. you have your own paganism, my brother in Christ, of our ancestors, preserved by our church, but you are seduced by the rule of cool and you embrace this fucking Disneyland foreign import. all of this doesn't really matter though, because the true religion of the Balkans is nationalism.

i should've clarified, my bad
my critique comes from a place of "one mutt american with a history degree to another"
i hear the words "christian morality" from one of my own n my knee jerk reaction, from someone who then then says vikings were violent looters etc n i don't fundamentally see a difference... he covered what the spaniards did to the aztecs. i look at montezuma's headdress in a foreign land, n i read of viking graves with islamic artifacts and i do not fundamentally see a difference between the two. "If not viking, why viking shaped?"
minty
minty
i merely wish to extend the larping claims. within my countries own borders the claim "you have christian morals" etc comes across as a massive cope from ppl who lined up behind the worst ppl to champion their religion
ppl who are secure with themselves n in their beliefs don't need to demand others follow them. screams of insecurity from any party doing so

that he used Vikings as an example may not be right, but he was right in claim that charity and helping the poor were popularized as virtues by the Christians. i remember reading letters of Julian the Apostate, and he was pissed about that

hahahahaha
"Arabic artifacts in Viking graves suggest some of them may have been Muslim"
what a reach
Yeah, and many Montenegrians sent their weapons to Alexandria to be decorated by islamic craftsmen, must be cause they were Muslim
dude, you have a taste for exotic goods, gonna interpret it the way I want
like, were those graves even oriented towards Kaba? nah, who cares about such details

what the fuck happened to using the Occam's razor? silk is wealth, silk is status, a luxury, was long before islam came along. Kiddo, I suspect political motivation behind these conjectures

yes, but i can also point to the incan empire as an example of "there were no 'poors' to need charity before the christians arrived". the incans justified their empire by providing housing, food, and land to work for everyone. this was insanely based. n after the conquistadors arrived n were like "no this is ours now" the natives were deeply confused. there were/are a lot of south american indigenous cultures that had/have a "gift giving" mentality wherein the chieftain only has and/or maintains dominance by sharing their shit n holding feasts where they eat last.

as for the mask n candy anecdote, that sort of overlap is why syncretism works. i did like that he mentioned syncretism. turns out as a species we're all just very uncreative with our myths/belief systems. golden apples in norse, greek, n even manannan mac lir in celtic myths... snakes heralding the end of the world in egyptian, aztec, n norse, etc...
that's why some of the pagans just celebrate generic solstice holiday

tried to look up "gift economy" n found this
how quaint that native systems that existed keep getting re-discovered as "sustainable"
minty
minty
yeh i don't think the vikings practiced syncretism. there have been statues combining traits of isis n venus n this is not comparable
Tech Noir
Tech Noir
yeah, but statues weren't really a thing to norsemen, i think
maybe they had interscandinavian syncretism, or with Celts
I ever tell you that statues of Buddha exist because of Alexander the great?

there's mostly just lots of stone sites with runes carved in them. ppl worked with what they had mostly.
found out today there was basically a stonehenge in cahokia. had no idea. only knew abt the snake mound. knew some west coast tribes mined obsidian.
no, you didn't. which style buddha? the skinny version or the heckin' chonker?
