Yeah, I could only see any of the -core bands as metal only if they have at least 1 album that mostly comprises of songs with metal riffs.

Like Avenged Sevenfold legit started as metal, then changed singers (and later style) a few albums later.
Mr. Bungle is another one, where their debut is fairly straightforward speed metal/ thrash, then they went into ska/ jazz fusion and then even weirder shit.
