    Wikipedia also calls Cathars "proto-gnostics". It's NEO-Gnostic. They were the prophets.

    Proto could either mean "pre" or "similar". You gotta remember, this was after the Nicean council and before the rediscovery of the Nag Hammadi in 1945. They weren't being exposed to Gnostic philosophy. They just knew the Bible too well. They based their doctrine off 2 Corinthians 4:4 and saw inconsistencies in scripture that made them conclude there were two Gods, even without access to the Hebrew which affirms it (Elohim could be singular or plural, depending on context). And they called the demiurge "Rex Mundi". Billy Graham and other Pauline evangelicals are "proto-Gnostic" in that thet're Gnostic-LIKE, but not quite the same thing. That's why it's misleading and disingenuous to call these people that. They were a continuation of the Gnostic tradition - visionaries who foresaw the future (the laurel prophecy after the savages executed and persecuted the cathars down tp the last man, woman and child).
