That’s because we live in a corporate dominated internet now. The old sites like newgrounds, 4chan and friends, æ, something awful, ebaums, YTMND. Are mostly dead. With the exception of 4chan which is kept alive with the stubbornness of /pol/ and media coverage. But reddit,Twitter,ETC continue to reign.

yeah, but spoonfeeding newfags isn't good either. i think learning something as complicated as basic markup language is a good filter since even chris-chan was able to learn that shit (kind of)
