Very few people talk about the african slave traders, who for the most part were black Africans or Arabs. It seems most people assume that you just sailed up to Africa, shook the nearest banana palm and knocked whatever fell out if it over the head with a mallet and then chucked them in the ships holds.

so when europeans showed up, some of the more powerful tribes offered to sell them prisoners from other tribes
berber traders in the area also realized they could sell local villagers for an easy profit
pretty damn soon it was a major industry
identical shit happened in the americas, the cherokee were especially notorious for keeping black slaves and slaves from other tribes
