Things always evolve, reach their peak for a few years, then go backwards. In the 80's, everything was inappropriate and disgusting, and it was "Christian moms against"... everything! Nintendo, board games, the Simpsons... In the 90's, they warmed up to "edginess". In the 2000's, nobody gave a fuck anymore, and almost anything flew. Then in the 2010's, everything became inappropriate and disgusting again...
80's: "Nintendo Fever"
90's: Mortal Kombat, Night Trap (a shitty FMV game) and Doom + Eric Harris played Doom causing controversy
00's: Legislation was attempted to ban minors from buying "violent games"
10's: "Video games cause violence!" and Fortnite's release producing a herd of angry prepubescent children
20's: They attempt to reverse all of that by turning everything into a (((nice, cozy game))) perfect for (((casual players))) with (((relaxed gameplay))) and a (((diverse rosters))) made by a (((small, grassroots indie team))) as a (((love letter to the games of the 90's)))
