Or perhaps, just perhaps, it was all just the result of a mentally-ill and chronically depressed director who tried to cram his mediocre anime full of religious symbolism and random shit because he was too much of a pussy to just hang himself.
The worst part about the show was the pacing... it's almost like they started making an anime and didn't know where the hell they were even going with it. It's boring as fuck for the first 4 episodes, and then after about 10 episodes you start getting shit like two mechas dancing in order to fight the baddy of the week. And by the end you can tell that the director was about ready to neck himself because his anime ended up sucking ass after 24 episodes and had absolutely no way to redeem itself in the final 2.
you forgot the part where they ran out budget so they had to use minimal animation like sketches or still images but 25 years after nerds are still talking about how deep and deconstructional it was, or that the Anno completely mixed up Christianity with Judaism and religion symbolisms makes no sense from both perspectives

nah, they ran out of money and had to make ending on low budget. that's why it had to be reworked into two cashgrab movies.
he snapped while making end of evangelion tho. you can see it in sequences that were cut out, like this one where voice actors play their characters in an alternative live action world
I legit love how they've been milking this show for over 2 decades now. just make something else already.
