MONROE COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) — Deputies in one Georgia county report that a sergeant was demoted after his K-9 companion was found dead in his patrol car pen.
Monroe County deputies said K9 "Khan" died May 14 after he was accidentally left in his pen which was located inside a hot patrol car.
Deputy Willie Barkley was Khan's handler and worked an overnight shift Thursday, returning home early Friday morning. He then went home where he completed a few reports in his patrol car and headed inside to get some sleep.
The deputy, however, forgot to take Khan out of the pen in the back of the patrol car.
According to a press release, the deputy usually put Khan in a pen in his yard, but due to the lack of sleep, he forgot Khan was in the car. Barkley returned to the car later on Friday afternoon to find Khan had died from apparent overheating.
An internal investigation was conducted and the district attorney was notified of all the findings. The investigation determined "this was an avoidable accident."
The District Attorney's Office was in agreement with the findings and no charges will be taken against Barkley. He has been demoted from sergeant to deputy, removed from field operations and suspended without pay for five days.
Khan was a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois that was with the sheriff's office since July of 2018.
