Digi used to drink (alcohol) a lot during his best period of work, so he always relied on substances. He did pretty well only smoking two to three cigarettes a day for a long while too. I agree on your points to due with weed though.
As someone who has trouble relaxing, I myself use it to that end. I can still play video games pretty well as well as follow shows and the emotional value is definitely increased when high. But don't ask me to create a coherent analysis when high. I could easily do that the day after, but Digi is blazed 24/7 and it shows in his work. In the beginning he used weed while watching shows and it really can increase enjoyment of media. But for productive and constructive work? Nah forget it. That ain't gonna happen.
He's also a true mommies boy and clings to her example. He has a ton of reverence for her as for a long time he didn't have friends due to moving all the time, so she became his de facto person to hang out with outside of school time. His personality formed from her personality AFAIK. She doesn't seem like a bad woman from what I've seen/heard, nor is his father a bad man I think. But they were both people that came from nothing, not a dollar to their name, and as usually is the case; monetarily poor parents raise pampered children, especially the first and last child. Vic had to figure out his path for himself and thus is the most successful in normie terms and their younger brother Shay/Shade (never know how to spell it) was even more depressed than Digi, but for him medication worked. He took up a normie job and moved out with his gf just like Vic.
You are probably spot on with Digi "giving up being the responsible one". He saw his brothers being the breadwinners and his own succes decline. He pushed so many ideas but left so many failed by the wayside and after a lot of drug and alcohol use he got the easiest out: his gf Amanda (broken through drug use herself) pushed him to accept himself as a girl and he bailed on his responsibility. Her acceptance combined with childhood bullying he experienced and drug use cracked his brain into believing his own bullshit.
I believe at his inner core what Digi wants is just to be loved and accepted. He expressed this as "wanting to be understood". Maybe he never realized that he never needed to change after meeting his GF and having a moderate loyal fanbase. Please be responsible with your substance use people. This is a lesson."

They also really like to stretch the definition of lolcow. Lolcows are supposed to be people you laugh at, yet they have a they have a "category" of lolcow called "sadcows".
