I remember a short comic in Heavy Metal about this very same topic. McDonalds, Pepsi, International Food conglomerates like Nestle, etc., would have their own private armies and be fighting for agricultural land and water access. Governments became dependent on the corporations for money and the corporations controlled the governments by controlling their profits. If they made no money, basically shut down for quarter they could economically blackmail the government into doing what it wanted. Can't remember what happened but I'm pretty sure it was a nuclear exchange between the corporations.
Yeah I think we are steadily marching closer with all the western and eastern governments embracing a neo-fascist economic model.
And for those who don't really know what fascism means:
fascism
/făsh′ĭz″əm/
noun
- A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism
What's really weird is the populace seems to be embracing neo-feudalism, that they DON'T want individuality, they just don't want to be bothered and if they "go with the flow," then they are not the nail that sticks up. And the open ridicule and even violence for someone saying, "hold on. Let's pump the brakes here and think about this for a second," is met with such vitriol and abuse. The population only wants to be part of the scenery. The bulk of society is NPC. Fucking hell.
When both of those fucking retarded movement intersect, then yah the "Golden Era of CyberPunk" has begun. But, back to your original question, "When." That depends on one key factor: AI. How soon will AI gain "super-intelligence." Some say five years, some say ten. Dunno. Some even say as soon as the end of next year. Governments are eagerly embracing AI because AI models can easily assemble, computate and organize vast quantities of data. And you already know what I mean by "data." Us.
The US already is leaps and bounds ahead with this very type of implementation. Palantir, probably one of the most sinister corporations to ever be created and exist, (of course it's owned and headed by Talmudic jews - shouldn't be a shock there) is already in the process of doing this. Anyone who thinks that their party will put a stop to this, you're absolutely delusional. Both sides overwhelmingly approved it. Palantir is already compiling data on US citizens from the HHS, IRS, DOJ, service records, etc.
Not to mention the absolutely stunning positions the governments are now embracing: not producing your own food.

I guess the corporations don't want ANY competition. Which when eliminated will be a massive tool for the corporations and by proxy the governments for controlling the populace. In the US, we've already seen the panic over cutting EBT benefits of people dependent on the system. I had conversation with Grok on a topic which was very similar to this situation. Grok's solutions were stiff fines, loss of title/job and therefor income, strict rationing of food, and food based punishments. Imagine being a grown adult and having some computer program determine you were naughty, and therefore decreed no dessert for a week. Yes it was that insane. I repeatedly asked what would be done if someone still wouldn't comply.
Grok deflected and declined to answer.
But you say, it won't affect me. My neighbor likes me and they would give me the excess in the event of a food restriction. That's the thing, there won't be excess. Just enough to function, so growing your own food would be seen as a bypass of that decree and a danger to control. That's what Grok was implying.
Fucking hell, if they can restrict and control food, why wouldn't they expand on that control? Your job, mobility, hobbies, size of family, number of pets, even the promise of public services, (fire, health, and police services) etc. The more you think about it the more terrifying it becomes, and that's why I presume most don't bother to since they still enjoy the circuses the same corporations provide. How many corporations own sports teams? Sporting venues? Competitions? Film and television producers? And don't think you'll be able to independently produce a piece of media and have it be seen by the masses. YouTube, Twitter, etc., have all just finished that type of restriction. There is no reason to believe they wouldn't employ those policies again if "forced" to by the government. "But, I'll just make an independent film." Ok. "No Other Land" won the 2024 Academy Award and no one has seen it since they shut down distribution. You can't even watch it online in many parts of the world.
