Just finished Tron Ares... it's not bad. Solid 7.5/10, which I enjoyed more than Superman and Fantastic Four... but I'm biased. Some random thoughts:

• Jared Leto is a robot, acting wise. Perfect when he was a tool for Dillinger, less so when he's supposed to be opening up and gaining autonomy & agency
• On the flip side, Jared Leto being a producer probably ensured a lot of little Easter eggs from the previous two films are included, so his involvement is a wash.
• I do wish Bruce Boxleitner as Alan/Tron was involved somewhere, even as a reference. There were some references to Sam Flynn and Quora, but they were not really plot related.
• I appreciate the concept overall, a unique spin on the Tron idea. If I have any REAL complaints, they didn't spend as much time in the digital world than the first two films.
• There were also a couple sequal bait moments, but so did Tron Legacy and none of those panned out, so I'm not holding my breath.
• If you're not a fan of the previous two Tron films, forget it. You're probably not gonna like Tron Ares.
• Now did Disney fuck up by trying to make Tron a thing again? Maybe. But Tron fans are eating well, so who gives a shit if Disney doesn't earn anything from it. "Hur dur a sequel is doomed!" The sequels were all doomed, but we still got two more Tron films. I'm happy.
• Watching the Drinker's review, I think he's way off the mark on a lot of points. The main character, Eve Kim, wasn't your "current year" girlboss at all. She had to be rescued many times, she didn't fight her way out of much of anything... she was a CEO so the story entitles her to some assumed respect, but she wasn't no Mary Sue. In fact that bad guy was a black woman and the hero was a white dude, hardly "current year" political casting if you ask me.
• Another criticism the Drinker brought up was why would Dillenger's company be kept in the family... which happens all the time. Wang Computers melted down because it passed from father to son. The Ford Motor Company is still run by the Ford Family. Sorry this isn't a reasonable point.
• If Drinker doesn't like it, it's because he doesn't seem to really be into Tron in general. Which is fine, I'm not expecting this to be Shakespeare and, therefore, hoping it captures his attention.
• And that's the thing: all the Tron movies were always kinda shallow. The story is fun, but really people watch it for the music and the visuals. I read one comment that said "cool, new NIN album dropped, and it came with a free movie!" That's really all this is.
• For a more reasonable, agreeable review, watch RedLetterMedia's review.
• I'll probably watch it again, maybe... if I have the time.

So yeah, it was fun! My brother and I both enjoyed it, and that's the whole point.

The Drinker is rarely wrong. Did you know that he has 2.38 million subs on YT?

Another criticism the Drinker brought up was why would Dillenger's company be kept in the family... which happens all the time.

I think his point was about the ridiculous way the ownership of the company was transferred to a family member.

Besides I doubt your fat ass always eats at Michelin three-star restuarants 24/7, you willingly eat McDonalds garbage sometime. Do you complain that because McDonalds isn't Sous vide fillet of beef, pomme anna and mushroom purée??

That implies he can still be wrong, which he is this time. I respect his opinions, but blindly agreeing with him means you have less brains than the people he dunks on.

Also Disney has 6.44M subs on YouTube, surely that must make Disney's opinions worth more than the Drinker's.

Again, Wang Computers had a disasterous transfer from father to son that destroyed the company, while Ford Motor Company had transferred ownership from Father to Son to Son to Son a few times. Good and bad transfers of power can happen between family members, it happens in reality.

Frankly, given it's connection with tech, the collapse of Wang Computers because the company was transferred to an incompetent son is maybe the most apt example. Fred Wang (son of founter An Wang) didn't burn down his company overnight like Julian Dillinger did, but his actions absolutely caused its decline and demise, losing TONS of company value over a period of 6 years.

Quence does not blindly agree with ANYONE! However, the Critical Drinker makes some well reasoned arguments about Tron: Ares that any mildly intelligent person should consider since he has been proven correct about many other movies.

As far as I know, Disney is not a movie critic.
