Read "1848: A Year of Revolution." By Mike Rapport. It lays out the precursors to the Socialist/Communist/Fascist Revolutions that swept Europe in the early 1900's. It of course over simplifies the whole movement, but it gives an interesting synopsis of what was occuring in Europe socially, economically, and politically pertaining to the shift in populist viewpoint.
And it's a little less tin-foily. So you can mention it to your non-tin-foily friends you want to impress.
