play duke nukem 3d and quake on retroarch via the dosbox core (make sure to play the dos version of quake because it's the only one with music)
i've got retroarch on a super old computor with linux. i know there's quake on there and maybe duke 3D. i'll give it a go once i play through Blood again after my doom stuff.

what's the hardest difficulty you've beaten each game at and when/how often do you save? i've beaten all the major boomer shooters on the second-to-highest difficulty but save after every kill. one of these days i'll beat them without saving

with doom 1 on my pistol start playthrough i don't think i saved (other than the secret level, Warrens), its pretty easy after the first two playthroughs. Doom 2 has some high grade bullshit and poorly designed levels, so i tend to save every 5 minutes. Blood is a carefully crafted jigsaw trap at times, so i saved often in my first playthrough.

with Doom i stick with the classic Ultra Violence, since Nightmare just seems very irritating. With Blood it tends to be borderline impossible beyond Well Done, even longtime pro's like Civvie 11 can't really play it on anything higher.

GTA SA

Good gameplay/story, nightmarish controls.
og or remake? if you're playing the og and using standard controls then switch to classic as it was designed around on ps2

I just try to clear my backlog and played an insane amount of games per month. Right now playing Dead Island for the second time ever and it's pretty good when compared to the stuff I've played. Never even played Dying Light so that's something to try out for sure.

Last month I beat:
Cyclones, Killing Time (DOS), Turok 2, ZombiU, Alone in the Dark: the New Nightmare, Turok, Hocus Pocus, Wolfenstein 3d + Spear of Destiny, Conflict: Denied Ops, Exodus from the Earth, Patriot: Democratization, Instinct, Rage, They're Alive!, Men of Valor, Forsaken, Hardwar, Outlast 2, Alan Wake's American Nightmare, Alone in the Dark 3, Alone in the Dark 2, Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri.

been getting into OG doom the past couple of months, partially due to interest and mostly out of necessity. my new windows 11 can handle light gaming and a lot of new games tend to nuke your computer if its not at tip top speed.

anyway i've beated doom 1 twice, on my third run of doom 2, and beated the plutonia experiment once (halfway through it on my second playthrough, but i hate Bunker so i'll take a break). also been fiddling with brutal doom and ZDL 3.1.1.
for other games i managed to figure out NBlood so i can play Blood in a source port. if you like FPS and haven't play Blood, go and play it. its my personal favorite.

also been looking at Andrew Hulshult's recreations of the doom 1 and 2 soundtrack. his version of the doom 2 soundtrack is a lot better than his swing at doom 1. even have the soundtrack as a .wad file so i can play it with brutal doom. would recommend. here's the whole thing on youtube, he's never officially released it and its been about a year.

had some screenshots from my plutonia playthrough but they got lost, sorry buds
You don't need a source port for Blood, just BMOUSE.EXE to fix the glaring issue. But man, Plutonia is the real deal that's gonna turn you into Doom for real. Once you've suffered playing it, then player made wads are gonna feel like a breeze except the ones that are real hard. Which are those that you're gonna remember.

The newer GTA games can't replicate the feel when you bundle up a bunch of cars, then blow them up and watch everything be decimated.
the original creators of GTA made a new game.

Yeah, I remember seeing this in some blog and they weren't looking too favorably at it.
My favorite original creator (the DMA times) still remains to be Crackdown for Xbox 360.
