Y'see w/ hydroponics, it requires expensive fertilizer, tons of water, just the slightest dirt can kill the plant, it consumes a lot of energy, you can't even grow certain types of plants (like onions, beets, radishes or carrots), and it is overall not a sustainable resource and is highly experimental at this point. Aquaponics was developed in Japan during the Shogun era when there was a famine when a Japanese samurai invented a new method of mobile farming where he took a fish tank, took the plant, grew the roots inside the water, the fish ate the algae and fertilized the plant with their compost, the plant cleans the water. It's a self-sustaining cycle. Read "Pocket Farm" by Alec Deacon where he shows you how to make an aquaponic farm for just $190 to $400.
2. Petroleum - use hempseed oil made with a manual oil presser and everclear, lye, hemp biochar and a TLUD stove to make carbon negative hemp biodiesel for G20 engines like a BMW G series. For paper/plastics, you can definitely make paper out of hemp. You can also make plastics out of hemp, soybeans, wheat, flax or spruce pulp (although the latter requires deforrestation, which is less than ideal). It's very strong biodegradeable plastic you can make with an extruder. You can make cardboard from hemp instead of petroleum. You can make hemp biofoam instead of using petroleum-based styrofoams. And so on.
