dispossessing the wilderness by mark david spence talks abt this quite a bit actually. the land was inhabited and natives hunted and they gathered the dead sticks for fires n created trails etc. then when the crackers arrived they killed the wolves n shoved the natives on reservations n they wanted all that "untouched wilderness" for campers n all the deer n elk around in large populations so people could feel disney princess speshul. then cuz there wasn't anything culling the prey animals they started overgrazing and because nobody was gathering dry pine needles n twigs n shitty underbrush for campfires they started getting their shit wrecked by unrestrained wildfires. dude's right that re-introducing the wolves is nice but it doesn't solve every problem n it isn't a magic bullet. the idea of "uninhabited pristine land" is the issue. we're here to be fucking stewards, but crackers want their half-inch manicured lawns and monocrop agriculture n weedkiller n whatever hummer he mentioned, n elect the most rapacious land-stripping people possible into office, instead of acting indigenous to this land
