'Dark Souls' Is A Game About Living Under Capitalism In 2020

To live in the year 2020 is to be filled with the sense that the world as we know it is coming to an end. It’s hard to pinpoint just one piece of evidence, but take your pick—an imminent climate collapse heralded by apocalyptic storms and wildfires; a rampant global pandemic; the descent of nations around the world into authoritarian fascism; failing institutions unable to contain the viral spread of disinformation. It’s not the dystopia we’ve been taught to expect. Instead of giant meteors, zombie plagues, and other numbingly cliché scenarios, ours is a harrowing reality of slow-burning crisis-upon-crisis that has never been adequately captured in speculative fiction and pop culture. As far as I’m concerned, there’s one game that comes close to evoking the vibe of our end-times, and that’s the bleak, decaying world of Dark Souls. For a game with lots of exploration and very little dialogue, the lore of the Souls series is astoundingly deep. Using environmental storytelling...

The New Yorker has suspended reporter Jeffrey Toobin for masturbating on a Zoom video chat between members of the New Yorker and WNYC radio last week. Toobin says he did not realize his video was on. Two people who were on the call told VICE separately that the call was an election simulation featuring many of the New Yorker's biggest stars: Jane Mayer was playing establishment Republicans; Evan Osnos was Joe Biden, Jelani Cobb was establishment Democrats, Masha Gessen played Donald Trump, Andrew Marantz was the far right, Sue Halpern was left wing democrats, Dexter Filkins was the military, and Jeffrey Toobin playing the courts. There were also a handful of other producers on the call from the New Yorker and WNYC. The New Yorker editor David Remnick wrote in an email to all New Yorker staffers: “Dear All, As you may have read in various news reports today, one of our writers, Jeff Toobin, was suspended after an incident on a Zoom call last week. Please be assured that we take...

A woman who reportedly burned her boyfriend’s penis with hair straighteners as an agreed punishment for cheating on her has received a suspended jail sentence. Bronwyn Joy Parker, 22, from Mount Baker, Australia, pleaded guilty to giving her boyfriend's genitalia third degree burns, NT News reported. District Court Judge Paul Muscat said: “His penis will be scarred for life and he will suffer from a number of issues, including the proper function of his penis, not to mention the cosmetic and psychological problems associated with the scarring to such a sensitive site.” He added that Parker’s crime was one of the “most unusual” he had ever encountered. Parker had applied the hair straighteners for only a few seconds, telling police she thought it would feel like sunburn. She said: “To start off with, it looked brown around the outside and it didn’t look too bad. It just looked like a cooked piece of meat.” The victim suffered third degree burns to each side of the shaft of his...

Madison Heights — The Metro Detroit man killed during a shootout with FBI agents Friday served an 11-year prison sentence for shooting at two police officers, was an adherent of an anti-government movement and played a minor role in the infamous Ruby Ridge standoff, one of the darkest chapters in federal law enforcement history. The troubled life of Madison Heights resident Eric Mark-Matthew Allport, 43, started to emerge as details about what led to the fatal shooting remained shrouded in secrecy and as believers of the right-leaning anti-government Boogaloo movement hailed Allport as a member and martyr. FBI officials have not revealed exactly how Allport was killed during a shootout with agents who were executing an arrest warrant for a federal weapons offense in the parking lot of a Texas Roadhouse in Madison Heights. The Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office said Allport died of multiple gunshot wounds and classified his death as a homicide. The shooting, which left an...

Violence erupted outside the Senekal Magistrate's Court where hundreds of farmers and residents had gathered in the Free State town in a show of support for the family of Brendin Horner. The 22-year-old farm manager had been savagely beaten and his body tied to a pole on a farm near Paul Roux last Friday. On Tuesday, as the two suspects made a brief court appearance, the angry crowd bayed for their blood and vowed to avenge Horner's murder themselves. Sekwetje Mahlamba and Sekola Matlaletsa were arrested the following day in connection with the brutal attack. Two gunshots were fired, court property destroyed and a police vehicle overturned and set alight by the angry farmers, who believe that the government is not doing enough to protect them. .@News24 @TeamNews24 As of right now there is NO-COVERAGE of what’s happening in Senekal on your platform. #BrendinHorner #FarmMurders pic.twitter.com/NVp9pIRRmd — AfroZa ???????? ????
