There is a somewhat inscrutable scandal currently rippling through the gamer universe on YouTube, although that is true on any given day, since big-time YouTube platforms, creators, and communities thrive on and grow from internecine feuds and similar conflicts. It’s pro wrestling, but with the wrestling replaced by uploads like “Hunting ghosts while wearing a heart rate monitor! (Phasmophobia).” Tuesday’s spectacle concerns Dream, one of the best Minecraft players in the world, and whether he cheated while notching one of his elite times in a speedrun of the game. Dream has vaulted into the upper echelons of gaming YouTube fame this year, according to Patricia Hernandez at Polygon, gaining over 10 million of his 14 million subscribers in 2020. YouTube named him the top trending and second overall creator on the platform this year. Those accolades aren’t determinative, but they do indicate how thoroughly he’s blown up. The surge can be chalked up to Dream distinguishing himself as...

Amahle (not her real name), a sex worker and mother of a young daughter living in South Africa, has faced an almost total loss of income since her government imposed a nationwide lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike the millions of other South African workers who’ve been negatively affected by the economic freeze, however, Amahle has received no government support in exchange for her lost earnings. Predictably, she has struggled to pay her rent. Amahle is not alone. With many governments around the world imposing drastic measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, sex workers have been pushed to the brink of financial desperation. Because sex work is not recognized as a “legitimate” profession, sex workers have been unable to access government relief programs in countries where sex work is criminalized. Without financial and social support, sex workers are slipping through the cracks. By driving sex work further underground, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in...

A popular Russian YouTuber faces 15 years in prison after his girlfriend died during a livestream stunt where he made her stand outside in the freezing cold. Near-naked Valentina 'Valya' Grigoryeva, 28, was believed to have died of hypothermia after Russian streamer Stas Reeflay, 30, forced her to stand outside in subzero temperatures during a broadcast. Now witnesses and forensic specialists allege that earlier in the video he had inflicted appalling injuries on the woman, who had revealed she was pregnant on a previous livestream. She was said to have sustained serious head and facial injuries from beatings and three blows to her face along with 'multiple bruises'. One viewer testified that after his violent attack, he locked her outside in her underwear after pouring water over her. She tried to wrap herself in a jacket which he took away, saying she needed to 'sober up'. She was outside in the bitter cold in Moscow region for up to 15 minutes. When he brought her in...

It's such a peaceful image. A woman handing out fruit to a group of young people. But the print is the product of conflict and pain. The bloody, brutal Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) is the theme of an exhibition of prints at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas. At least a million died, fighting for racial and economic equity. And education. "If you were the wrong color, you were not allowed to go to school," says curator Lyle Williams. Some of Mexico's greatest artists, known as Mexican Modernists, joined the protestors. In the image above, Diego Rivera (Frieda Kahlo's husband) draws Mexicans of all races getting apples along with a revolutionary goal: learning. To Williams, the message is "we work hard. The fruits of our labor are education for all." (Click to see Kahlo's 1931 portrait of herself and Rivera.) Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, "Los Tres Grandes" (The Three Greats who are the focus of the exhibition) fought tyranny through their...
