1. Not all the time. If you actually look not all of it is dull. For me the dreary parts of alaska are the appeal.

Found this out just now, but apparently that great value walmart store brand makes knockoff candy bars. I'm not sure this is an alaska thing but it's real cool for cheapskates like me. They don't have this in the lower 48 so I think it's in certain countries that get this.
