my guess is quence wasn't being literal and was poking fun at the left. more than once, i've heard the left bitch about white people mistake one black person for another and how racist it is.
it is easier to identify individuals within one's own race from individuals of other races, for whatever reason, is my guess. and it isn't because a person is racist.
in my experience, i've had this happen with black people because i avoid looking at them the same way i would a non-black person. there are cultural differences between rural white people and inner-city black people.
very quickly i figured out some black people are quick to get triggered if they think you are staring.
last year, i had a black co-worker, i considered him a friend, we were orientation buddies. but one day i was talking to him and he stopped me, "WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?" i figured out he thought i said nigger. i was at work, no way i would say that. but i repeated the sentence to humor him because i didn't want to deal with a biased HR and he replied, "Okay we good."
After that, I never said anything more than a simple hello. Even if I did say nigger, if he was going to turn on me that quickly, he isn't a friend so fuck him.

Not to get down too deep into this rabbit hole but
I found that in the US there are two kinds of prejudice/racism:
* hostile prejudice — where white folk actively want to chase out people that they don't like
* ignore prejudice — where white folk basically pretend you don't exist
I'm not going to get into what's better or worse, but in my experience blacks and Latinos tend to experience the "hostile" flavor while Asians experiece the "ignore" flavor. This is why you tend to see Asians not really doing much of anything to rock the boat, because it's a combination of just Asian-style comformity being taught to us but also a sort of acknowledgement that nothing we do will get noticed by White Americans... so why bother? It's just easier to keep your head down and live your own good life. Or we could work EXTRA hard for white-senpai to notice us, but that has mixed results (like, who's dick do we need to suck just to become DA of San Francisco???).
Your coworker likely was gunshy of the former: YOU didn't actually do anything to him (as far as you say at least), so yeah, it's not fair to lash out at you for it. But when you have a whole bunch of people actively telling you're shit, it's hard to not feel gunshy. Think about it: if people did the following to you and everyone you know on the regular (as in, more than just once or twice in your lifetime)... maybe you'd learn how to deal with it, but someone else you know might not.
And it's not even a matter of "just follow police orders and nothing bad will happen" but white bitches be freaking out about you for no goddamn reason, and punching them in the jaw is not a good way to prevent the cops from inserting themselves into your life. This is where I've tried my best to just treat people as a the individual person they are. This doesn't mean being "colorblind", just focusing on what they do to me and what I can do to them. All businesslike. If someone likes or hates me, it's because if the way I acted towards them, or they just didn't like my attitude, and not because I'm Asian or they're white/black/whatever. Sometimes I can't always win to get people to stop thinking of me in terms of my race, but in the end that's not my problem to conform to their idea of me.
Ultimately we live in a society, and we can't just get rid of people we don't know how or want to deal with. We should either learn how to deal with one another better, just or move to Vermont or Alaska where you never have to deal with it. In any case, I personally reject the Left's and the Right's claims about the consequences of our society—whether the police is just institutionalized racism and that the solution is to kill all cops, or that we would be a much more peaceful society of those uppity niggers would just stop peacefully buring shit down... but I do also recognize that there is definitely a grain of truth to them: many police officers have zero incentive to not be assholes to people (especially if they're NOT from that community), and many blacks could avoid 80% of their problems if they just calmly listened to police orders. I would like society to fix those matters without feeling like fixing them is an admission that the other side was 100% correct about EVERYTHING ELSE.

when you single out one group for being racist while ignoring racism from other groups, it makes everything worse. this is why blacks tend to be more racist than other groups, because they don't get called out like white people do and they know it. encouraging a lack of self-awareness benefits nobody. broadly speaking, in the workplace, white people tend to be the least racist. if something goes to HR, I know I am already at a disadvantage. unlike other groups, white people also don't stick together like other groups. if i am a racist, there will very likely be another white person to call me out. I have called other white people out because I feel they are making the rest of us look bad. above is also why transgenders are so insufferable - in the workplace they know people are afraid to call them out. and management will be apathetic because they don't want to get sued. yes there will always be videos of racist white people, but by and large, we've already been classified. the only side that wants white supremacy to still be a thing is the left.

now, even if i have money saved, i always apply for unemployment, food stamps, LEAHP, etc. i also encourage others to do so, especially senior citizens. a senior friend didn't like applying for government handouts until I explained the government is giving illegals free housing, healthcare, meals, etc.
