as per norm, the one with the bandit mask is a menace
everybirdy else was asleep n she was running around terrorizing them pecking their beaks to establish head command
20240602_084312.jpg

there are three though that had bad shipping stress. i have been nursing them with electrolytes in an eye dropper. one passed n i buried her in my tomatoes. one is perking back up, and another is trying.
while chicks can go the first day n some without food because they are still digesting the yolk, the issue is getting stuffed in a box n yeeted from p.o to p.o
shipping stress can result in not eating or drinking. so i have literally spent every 45 minutes manually opening their beaks to put a crumb of food in far back enough that they have to swallow it because if its in the front of their mouth they spit it out

I'm gonna be honest, I stopped reading at the halfway point and just looked at the pictures. Nice cocks, by the way.

i don't mind
you are a young one, n hopefully will not need animal rescue knowledge for many years still

all of my best efforts of elecyrolytes and forced feeding have produced the following results:
silverlaced wyandotte in recovery, eyes open, alert, walking around

egyptian fayoumi continued fading during the day
20240602_190617.jpg

i listened to her breathing n there's a crackle. she has aspergillosis pneumonia. her n the other one that passed probably had the fungus spores in them from the hatchery.
my son wants to keep trying, but there's no vet here to get her antifungals n she'll probably be gone before midnight iibh

the fayoumi passed n the silver laced did as well. the 5 left are all healthy, active, alert, n discovering the joys of runaway bunny
Do you find that having grass all around those vegetable plots hurts or helps the growth of the crops?
this is on the top of a slope in the yard.
tree n grass roots keep the soil in place, lessening soil erosion. it has been very rainy here this season, if you didn't know... but ofc you've been paying attention to the midwest storms going on (you would know all about that, yes? as well-informed as you like to stay...)
tl;dr i like my tomatoes not getting washed downhill

I see. And yes, I do like be well-informed.

Um, what do you do when all of that grass continues to grow in and around the crops? You can't really mow it because you don't want to kill the wonderful veggies you're growing. OTOH, I'm sure you don't want the grass crowding out all of the hard work you put in to producing that wonderful vegetable patch.

OOH, I just had an idea! What if you used chicken wire to protect the crops and hired some goats to eat the grass?

SuperChungus

That'll hold 'em awight
Nice to see the farm after a bit.

So get this, I was weeding and found a peanut plant
1000016610.jpg

Or at least I think it's a peanut plant.
I have no idea how it got there.
But I kinda want to tend to it and let it grow.
Are peanut plants a difficult one?

it does look like a peanut...
honestly this year i've been finding stuff i didn't plant intentionally
somebody in your area may have fed a squirrel n they planted it?
i have no idea if they're difficult, tbh
i planted peanuts last year intentionally, some grew n started to flower but when they flower that drops into the ground and grows a peanut that you then have to dig up like 2 weeks later, iirc
basically it ended up just being too involved for me
potatoes are easy cuz once they flower you dig 'em up, tomatoes n peppers n others above ground you can see progress, but peanuts are weird n i didn't bother even trying to dig 'em up i lost track of days

in the realm of non-deliberate plants i found 2 pumpkins in the backyard and a sunflower between the fence n netting
20240616_112047.jpg

20240616_112053.jpg

20240616_112104.jpg

both of these pumpkins are doing better than the ones i have put deliberate effort into... but the tiller i bought finally arrived and is all set up now so i am going to get the patch ready n not bother, since apparently pumpkins, like half of the chickens, are cool being near me and will gather around me but do not want attention
other deliberate food stuffs is doing well, even had the first pot roast of the year with home grown baby carrots, some diced tomato n pepper, n potatoes n string beans home supplied

Your efforts pale in comparison to my dandelion harvest this year.
If there is ever money in the dandelion trade, I'll be an overnight gorillionaire.

Oh, dandelion leaves are quiet edible. Just use 'em as your vegetable and pair them with the main course of boiled cod and the side-dish of more boiled cod. Yum Yum!

goober's egg, which i knew wasn't hers but i thought would maybe be a half breed, hatched today. because old english game hens are psychopaths to children that don't resemble them, she then proceeded to try n murk the little yellow butter homie
i found it alive, moving, n not too maimed hopefully?
i cleaned homie up with warm water, flushed the wound out with saline solution, used an anti-microbial spray
1000007584.jpg

and then put a chicken wound ointment on homie, gave a very small amount of electrolytes n stuck under the heat lamp
1000007585.jpg

it's breathing, moving, and next to one of them rice pillows freshly removed from the microwave for warmth

i will be checking on the patient periodically throughout the day to evaluate its condition.

Yes, I asked because I don't know shit about poultry medicine.
That looked a bit like liquid wound plasters as well.

Dr. Minty. Chicken Medicine Woman.

There was a little bird that had this same wound at the plant the mama bird had three chicks and this little one was always being ditched. I picked it up and brough it to some water and gave it some crackers. When I came back on break it had this exact same wound, it was dead. it was sad though it would always follow mama and siblings and they would always run away from him/her.

When I found him dead I knew that the jews were responsible for it.

it's more like chicken neosporin
keeps the wound moist, insects out, n has a little bit of alcohol in it to fight infection
blue color to discourage cannibalism

the patient is moving around, sitting up on its own, and peeping but obviously we're not out of the woods yet
the movements are still baby movements, what it would do if it were under a hen, resituating in sleep, etc... all infuriating at the moment as it flops over onto the injury while sleeping n rubs the ointment on its little swollen eyelid and i have to keep re-cleaning it out
sitting up n peeping at me
