yeah those links specifically mention it's highlander gaelic tradition...
i'll read this when i get a chance
it's weird now tho the aesthetic is less associated with ireland
irish "aesthetic" became patchwork stuff (which is also neat, btw)

@Lovecraft Also, what I meant wasn't the fabric itself, but tartan patterns. The book is just a preview, and it cuts off before that part. Any mistakes I made were made from drawing from memory of something I read 12 years ago (Rawlinson placed in 19th instead of 18th century, for instance, and forgetting the juicier part- plagiarizing Irish culture)

Someone posted a meme as a response to Christians bitching about drag on the olympic opening ceremony, can't find it but it was something like "well drag and olympics are older than Christianity". Yeah, they are, but it's same thing as saying apples and sand are older than Christianity- they still don't have anything to do with each other. Olympics were a religious festival dedicated to Zeus, and I'm pretty sure ancient Greeks wouldn't be happy about having drag in them. The example you offered - actors in theaters - that ended with woman's suffrage, right?

do lowland scots dressing in highland attire count as drag? it's a costume
Just a costume or what they erroneously believe is their cultural heritage? Edit: though it might as well be, truth is what everyone accepts, not what some historian writes in a book. Truth by consensus.

But look, you're referring to a culture in which genders weren't separated by clothing- lowlanders had pants, Irish (or the highlanders) had those tunics, or whatever they were. Scotsman wearing a kilt is honoring his (?) tradition. Scotsman wearing an ordinary dress is a faggot.

in all srsness tho kilts are insanely based

the wool repels water to keep out the rain while you're in the fields, the extra yards of fabric double as a blanket n keep you warm. you have easy access to piss on the english
10/10 cultural attire tbh

I guess I could expand upon this: you saw that lowlanders despised highlanders before the cultural shift. So, lowlander seeing a highlander in a skirt: "savages gonna savage".
Lowlander seeing another lowlander in a skirt: "what the fook, what would yer family say, did they raise a savage?" (or maybe "fags gonna fag", idk)

Scots and Anglos for the most part of their history had a profitable cooperation, Irish were always those who resist. Kilt? It's fake, but I guess it's better to have a fake cultural distinction than none at all in this world that is getting more and more uniform. I heard Canadian rightwingers complain that Quebec French slashed their tires and other shit for not knowing French. "Why cant they learn English?". These people say they want to preserve their culture, and then they obliviously bitch when others try to do the same.

It wasn't a long kilt, it was a tunic/toga thing. Highlanders aren't Scottish, they are Irish tribes that settled Scottish highlands. Lowlanders with the rise of nationalism adopted a lot of their culture thinking they are "restoring traditional Scottish culture", but "real" Scotland was always the lowlands one.
I thought you were polish , how do you know so much about scotland? There new brown pm wants to invade the place with south asians like every british colony.

It's just the book I posted man, find it, read it, then you'll know as much as I do. History can be fun, especially when it's debunking shit we all take for granted.

the ones that cooperate with the anglos gotta be lowlanders
that independence referendum was too close for me to give up on them entirely
more research must be done
