Did I in any way say it was a bad thing?
Before the forum was nuked I did post in the old thread about myself wanting to get goats to keep the forest new growth at bay and even then mentioned that animal husbandry is a slippery slope.
Used to raise chickens myself back in Buttfuck Nowhere, I can relate.
But then Obongo crashed the economy into the tower and the price of feed and seed became unaffordable.
If it wasnt for that, I'd probably raise another flock right up

Crazy already.
Probably some horrible poultry-borne disease or parasite.
Time to start looking for local alpaca breeders I reckon.
nah it's the "cat lady" part
hoarding cats is useless. having basic homesteading livestock which ensures less kitchen waste and helps create effective fertilizer, especially when you want to homestead, is like... the opposite of useless

actually i have spent the last couple days looking at sheep and the process of wool trimming, spinning, and general textile tomfoolery. no desire for alpacas
these little bastards tho...

Ah, I forgot you people have been having political discussions around the term in recent times.

Not mailing livestock anywhere, too much paperwork. Transporting livestock in country between defined zones is enough of a nuisance as it is due to restrictions to prevent foot and mouth disease spread. Been looking into the rules for having goats defined as pets.

who's "you people"? i don't give a fuck abt the retarded culture war
my mom taught me to grow crops back in high school. she also hoarded cats. i kept one of these two traits, n it's the one that's actually useful

stfu with your serious answer to a fake ass question, hoe

today on "as the coop turns":
goober's egg, which she stole and kicked artemis off of but is an old english game egg, hatched. bandit, who hatched her egg a week(?) ago had been taking her chick to sleep in the nesting box goober was sitting on this egg on so the chick hatched under bandit but both being broody and old english games is confusing the chick. bandit has jumpkicked her daughter goober to keep her away from it, goober has pecked bandit's child on the head, the new hatch will follow both.
here is a touching moment between goober and her child before bandit came over to try and claim these treats for her own child.
20240825_090401.jpg

20240825_090405.jpg

goober, unsure of whether to claim the child or out of a desire to be not violently assailed by her mother, has also pecked this child on the head, before mothering it and sitting on it for warmth. there's a lot of uneasiness today
mercury has been glad bandit has not been scrapping with her anymore, but with three mothers and their respective offspring trying to raise/be raised, graze, etc there is an... awe-inspiring? amount of feminine violence in the backyard

will bandit allow her daughter to raise her own child? will she claim it as her own? will goober retaliate by attacking bandit's child again? will artemis be allowed to actually hatch her own eggs and the children not get taken by possums next time? will i ever know peace again? find out all this and more on the next episode of dragonball z

Neat photos. I'm still amazed that there's so much grass everywhere. Do you think the grass is bogarting some of the nutrients that your plants might need?

as the hurricane outskirts weather brings some well-needed rain around the region, i have bad news.
i got home yesterday and then spent the afternoon indoors because of said rain. when i went to close the chickens in for the night, i only saw about half of them in the coop.
my husband and i managed to track down most of them last night, the rest turned up this morning, except for one.
honey

honey is missing, and as the rain and hunters change where the animals hang out at (i even saw two foxes on my route yesterday) i have a sneaking suspicion honey went down defending his two white bitches from a fox or raccoon. this would explain the scattering, and my sweet boy being gone

husband checked around for honey a few times while i was at work, n i did a pass around the area too

an update on the goober n bandit situation i did not post yet: goober's child just straight up disappeared out the coop two nights back. i have no idea where it went, but i am guessing cannibalism/nugget mukbang? because there is no way any opportunistic predator would have made it in the coop past all the roosters to pick one baby out of the back of the coop, let alone leave all the other chickens. after that goober went insane, n has taken to continually attacking bandit's child so i have put her in thot jail. never letting these two be broody at the same time again. lesson learned.

see how half the back feathers on bandit's child are missing? they'll grow back but goober was like "my kid's gone so i'm murkin' yours"

beebo got gotted by a predator. she got stuck somewhere so i blocked the area off so it wouldn't happen again
between having to re-direct the white chickens back to sleeping in the coop (venus ESPECIALLY, as she had taken to sleeping in the neighbor's tree after honey disappeared) and the two white chickens laying their eggs who the fuck knows where (every day is an easter egg hunt with these two idiots) after looking around the other evening during a brief period of peace, i realizes hermes was missing... and i have no idea when she disappeared
bit sad about that one... she was so calm and so quiet that BECAUSE of the lack of chaos on her part i did not notice her missing :(
uprooted the pumpkin vines and some corn. the pumpkins did not do as well as i would've liked since we have had zero inches of rain the last month. i did get a few heirloom ones tho, including a variant i haven't had grow for me previous year. so not a total failure. had a solid haul of greens from the greenhouse. lettuce, mizuna, bok choy all on point.
apart from that, artemis went broody again, and so i gave her two eggs to sit on from the white chickens after i had seen boo mate with them. got a lot of old english and cochin offspring so need some new dna before i end up with alabama inbred lines. i have candled them n they are both developing. so some half-mid half-full size science project chicks are on the way fingers crossed

Question: why don’t you put up some chicken wire so that you don’t keep losing birds?
